About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Fountain City, Wisconsin, The Golden Frog is a charming American restaurant and bar that invites diners to step back in time while indulging in a hearty and satisfying meal. Established in 1878, this historic venue retains its original character, offering both locals and visitors a warm atmosphere brimming with stories and rich heritage. The restaurant’s name pays homage to its German roots—“Zum Golden Frosch,” meaning The Golden Frog—named after the saloon keeper with golden red hair. This unique backstory weaves seamlessly into the welcoming ambiance you encounter as soon as you walk through the door.

The Golden Frog’s menu is a treasure trove of classic American comfort food elevated with a creative twist. Whether you’re craving smoky, tender BBQ ribs that melt off the bone or the indulgent Jacked Up Frog Burger and Fries that pack a flavorful punch with every bite, you’ll find dishes that hit all the right notes. Their beer selection, including the distinctive “Frog Water,” perfectly complements the robust flavors, making it an ideal spot for casual evenings or celebratory gatherings.

For those seeking a starter loaded with crispy textures and bold tastes, the hand-dipped cheddar curds and golden onion rings are impossible to resist. The appetizers showcase a masterful balance of crunchy and savory, whether you’re enjoying deep-fried chips or jalapeño poppers with a spicy kick. The kitchen also shines with its hearty entrees such as the brushed chicken Alfredo pasta and the enticing Bier Battered Shrimp & Cod Dinner, each prepared with fresh, high-quality ingredients that deliver layers of flavor in every forkful.

The Golden Frog stands out for its ability to cater to all-day cravings. Start your morning right with breakfast specials like the Everything Omelet or the savory Hash Browns and Sausage Gravy, served alongside a Bloody Mary for a classic kickstart. Lunch and dinner options range from loaded nachos and taco salads that burst with freshness to the jumbo broasted drumsticks and succulent roast beef dishes that bring true comfort food to the table.

Customers consistently praise the inviting setting and attentive service here. Jennifer Boomsma admires the rich history and great vibe, noting the "great atmosphere, staff, and food.” For those searching for the perfect soup, Jair Netto’s glowing admiration of the clam chowder — so flavorful he returned for seconds — captures the authenticity and care poured into every dish. Alicia A echoes these sentiments with kudos to the perfectly hand-battered mushrooms and the warm, friendly service from the staff.

The Golden Frog’s Easter Buffet and Bloody Mary Bar offer a festive experience that transforms dining into a celebration. Whether you’re catching up with friends over cheesy poutine or savoring the crunchy delight of elote, this spot makes each visit feel special. This is a place where food, history, and hospitality blend seamlessly, promising not just a meal but a memorable outing.

Love the history The Golden Frog holds, being built in 1878 and serving people since. on the menu it states the saloon keeper and builder had golden red hair, hence the German name, "Zum Golden Frosch," which translates to The Golden Frog Great atmosphere, staff, and food!!

Let me start with if you don't suffer with food allergies, you'll love it. However, those of us who have food allergies it's hard to eat here. That being said - the server was on it! We had a large group and she was awesome. The food was great- mid depending on what people ordered. The taco salad was huge and full. The burgers were ok. The fries were tasty. Salad bar wasn't exciting, but filling. Fish was delish. Food reviews are from people who ate. They did allow us to bring food that we could eat so that we could be with the rest of our group. Overall - super quaint place with great people and interactions. Food ranges depending on what you order.

This is a great restaurant. The food was freshly made. We had the brosted chicken which was delicious, it came with your choice of potato and coleslaw that was really good. We had the 2-pc meals.

I was just looking for a soup for dinner a d didn’t have high expectations about this place. Surprisingly, both the environment and food were just perfect. I had the Clam Chowder Soup, TWICE! It easily so good I almost forgot to take a picture to post, I have it posted half way gone. I will definitely go back for a fried frog leg!

We stopped just for the clam chowder! It is a must try! We also go the hand battered mushrooms and the batter was perfect! We had Brooke for a bartender/server and she was super friendly and helpful.
